Medical Researches on Agaricus Blazei Murill
Scientific studies have paid great emphasis on the mushrooms’ legendary effects on the enhancement of good health, vitality and our body’s resistance against chronic diseases. Mushrooms contain a variety of compounds which can have powerful immune system enhancement properties. They are currently used as adjuncts to cancer treatments in Japan and the United States and are also used throughout the world to promote the immune system that eliminates variety of health problems like fatigue, skin diseases, asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Amongst the edible mushrooms which found to have medicinal properties, Agaricus Blazei Murill (commonly known as Agaricus Brazil Mushroom) is enjoying growing attention for its ability to enhance and balance immunity. The Agaricus Brazil Mushroom drew the attention of the world when the news that the ex-President of the United States, Ronald Reagan took the Agaricus Blazei Murill, to successfully fight his skin cancer. Animal experiments showed that not only is the Agaricus Blazei Murill an effective cancer fighter, it is also the best cancer fighter among all the medicinal mushrooms we know of. Its cancer cure rate is 90% and its cancer inhibition rate is 99.4%.
In 1980, at the Medical Department of Tokyo University, the National Cancer Center Laboratory and Tokyo College of Pharmacy, guinea pigs were tested on the anti-cancer effects of Agaricus Blazei Murill extracts compared to other mushrooms including Lingzhi.
Guinea pigs were vaccinated with a deadly Sarcoma 180 cancer cell which normally causes cancer to spread to the entire body over four to five weeks, resulting in the death of almost all these animals. Different types of mushrooms extracts were administered for 10 consecutive days. The results of the studies tabulated as Rate of Complete Recovery, indicated that 90.0% of those guinea pigs administered with Agaricus Blazei Murill fully recovered.
The second series of tests were on those fully recovered guinea pigs and in which a second dosage of Sarcoma 180 cancer cell was vaccinated to determine the Rate of Inhibition. The results showed that 99.4% of the guinea pigs survived as the second dosage of cancer cell has no impact on those already administered with Agaricus Blazei Murill.
Observations showed that a much lower dosage (10mg vs. 30mg) was required from the Agaricus Blazei Murill compared to the other species. This is mainly due to the much higher Beta-Glucan polysaccharides content in Agaricus Blazei Murill, in particularly the Beta-1,3D-Glucan and Beta-1,6D-Glucan.
From these results, it was deduced that the beta-glucan polysaccharides in the Agaricus Blazei Murill activate the immunity of the normal biological tissue to stimulate the production of cancer-fighting cells like Natural Killer(NK) cells, Lymphocyte T-cells, Helper T-cells, interferon and interleukin to prevent the multiplication, metastasis (spreading) and reoccurrence of cancer cells. The mushroom was also sited as a powerful antiviral agent that helped prevent viruses and harmful agents from entering delicate tissues.
The above report was released in the 39th General Convention of Japan Cancer Association in 1980. Since then, many clinical studies conducted in collaboration with universities researchers and hospitals concluded that the polysaccharides in Agaricus Blazei Murill are indeed effective in their battle against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma, sigmoid colonic cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and liver cancer as well as against solid tumors.
In 1994, clinical studies were carried out by Lanzhou University of Medicine and Gansu Tumor Hospital in collaboration with Mie University in Japan proved that Agaricus Blazei Murill showed significant result in minimizing radiotherapy and chemotherapy side effects in cancer patients.
In 1995, Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum, Ph.D. at King Drew Medical Center of UCLA, found that the mushroom enhances the total number of immune cells throughout the body and empowers the individual Natural Killer (NK) cells. He released in the 9th World Convention of Immunology that their research reported that Agaricus Blazei Murill significantly enhancing the activities of Natural Killer cells by 38-49 folds over controls.
In 1997, Agriculture College of Tokyo University released their finding that Agaricus Blazei Murill showed positive effects in the treatment of chronic diseases and conditions like high blood pressure, genetic skin problems and diabetes (some even completely healed).
